Surroundings
“I am going to take a look at the surroundings” could mean that
you want to make a tour of the estate, walk along the roads in the
neighborhood, reach the first village, visit the entire North of Apulia,
cross the border of the Basilicata region, or even go as far as Santa
Maria di Leuca, the last part of Italy facing East.
“The surroundings”, in other words, is a term that has a vague and
elastic definition, and in our view, it should stay that way. Apulia
is an interesting region to visit because, with its great variety
of places and cultures, it will never bore you. It is very long and
has a coastline of almost 800 kilometers that is washed by the waters
of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
“.. it is a long strip of land…”
wrote the noted expert of French studies Giovanni Macchia (born
in Trani in 1912), “…that
runs along the water like a ship for 350 kilometers, turns back almost
repentant and then throws itself on the other waters leaving on the
ground an extremely reduced place to inhabit: at one point, I think,
not more than 40 kilometers. In Apulia you can see the sea and you
sense it everywhere, almost as if it were an island."
Masseria Canestrello.
How
far you want to extend your voyage depends on you and your inspiration.
On certain occasions and on certain days, it you may prefer nothing
more than the trip between the pool, the estate rooms and the reading
room: “casa-casa” (home-home)
as we say around here. You might learn to treat yourself to some free
time, a virtue that our philosopher recommends practicing as frequently
as possible. Whatever your choice, Masseria Canestrello will be a
good point of departure.
It is well served by a vast and efficient road system, and it will
be easy to discover, especially with our directions, how varied and
interesting our region can be.
