S. Agata di Puglia is a beautiful little village with a commanding view of the plains.
In former times, when the plains were an uninterrupted sea of grass intended for pasturage, human settlements were confined to these hilltops. These hilltops were also a safe refuge from malaria, which in the plains mowed down many victims, as well as from enemy attacks.
The name of the town seems to derive from its founder, Agatone, a Norman who built a castle here that in the 17th century was transformed into an aristocratic palace.
The road to S. Agata gradually climbs the slopes of the hills and provides very suggestive views of the landscape.
