Ripacandida

Ripacandida is built on a hill 620 metres above sea level. From here you can enjoy a splendid panorama of Mount Vulture.The Church of Saint Donato has among its treasures a cycle of very beautiful frescoes.

The frescoes in the Church of San Donato

Scholars tell us that this church was already in existance in 1152 because it is recorded in a Papal Bull of the time. Successively it was entrusted to a community of Franciscan friars.
On the walls you can see the paintings of the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, The Last Supper, The Passion of Christ, The Annunciation, The Visitation.
The cycle of paintings representing Hell and the story of Noah, wherin the artist combines a fable like atmosphere with scenes from the daily life of the times, is rather fascinating.
