Rapolla

Rapolla is an old town built on a mountain ridge 600 metres high, on the eastern side of Mount Vulture.

In the Middle Ages, it was racked by conquering hoards and pillaging, but at the same time
hard-working basilian monks busied themselves with the frescoes in caves and churches. On the
outer walls of the Cathedral, which dates back to the XIIth century, you can still see,
walled-in, a couple of big bas-reliefs representing the Original Sin and the Annunciation.

In the Church of the Crucifix, which is on the road to Lavello, originally a basilian church which has been dug out of volcanic limestone
there are important mural paintings from the XIVth century.
