Lagopesole is in the limits of the Commune of Avigliano, placed in a magnificent position on the hills between the rivers Ofanto and Bradano.
Here we find one of the most famous castles built by Frederick II, which dominates over the whole valley and its surroundings. The building has a rectangular plan and throughout the centuries has undergone many changes. The oldest part of the building is the so called "small courtyard", with an imposing square tower in its centre.
Here, unlike at Castel del Monte, one can see very clearly that this castle was destined for war. This building emanates a deep atmosphere which is linked also to episodes of Piratry, but that again is another story.....
